May 14 Environmental Program - "The Impact of Environmental Challenges on the Avon Lake Power Plant Redevelopment Project"

04/29/2024 – Ward 1 Council Member, Rob Shahmir, will discuss the critical environmental challenges as pertaining to
the redevelopment of the Avon Lake Power Plant. The aim of the presentation is to raise awareness, provide knowledge, and foster discussions.

The presentation will briefly cover four critical topics related to environmental challenges associated with industrial sites.

The presentation will look at:
• Industrial Environmental Contamination in the Subsurface: Explore the sources, types, and risks of contamination in the subsurface caused by industrial activities.
• Environmental Carcinogens and Cancer Risk: Discuss industrial-derived environmental carcinogens present in air, water, and soil, and their association with cancer development.
• Environmental Site Investigation and Remediation: Understand the process of assessing contaminated sites, identifying risks, and implementing effective remediation strategies.
• Avon Lake Power Plant Probable Environmental Risks: Discuss potential environmental risks associated with the Avon Lake Power Plant, potential soil and groundwater contaminants, potential off-site migration pathways, Powder Maker Creek as environmental receptor and migration pathway, and Lake Erie.

This program is part of a year-long environmental series, presented in partnership with the Avon Lake Public Library and Avon Lake’s Environmental Affairs Advisory Board (EAAB), that addresses the environmental concerns of Avon Lake's residents expressed via the EAAB survey. Each session focuses on a different topic presented by experts who will educate, as well as provide tools and resources for making an impact in our community.
