Avon Lake Power Plant Building Successfully Imploded in Safe and Controlled Event

12/19/2024 – Avon Lake, Ohio – The City of Avon Lake has announced that the Avon Lake Environmental Redevelopment Group (ALERG) successfully and safely completed the final controlled implosion of the former Avon Lake Power Plant buildings this morning, marking another significant milestone in the ongoing redevelopment of the site.

The event, which took place at 5:33 AM, was carried out according to plan, with no injuries or major incidents reported. All structures were down just 30 seconds after the implosion started. ALERG representatives report dust moved south over the old coal and CEI switch yard area, dissipating from the site within approximately 20 minutes. Lake Road was closed until 6:45a to facilitate street sweeping. A building within the exclusion zone sustained minor damage. ALERG is onsite to clean up and is working with the business owner on repairs.

This final implosion, which involved the demolition of five structures on the power plant property, was the result of months of careful planning and coordination between ALERG, the City of Avon Lake, the Ohio EPA, the Ohio Department of Natural Resource and others.

"We are pleased that the implosion was again carried out safely and with a minimum of disruption to the community” said Mayor Mark Spaetzel. "Residents have been very understanding and we appreciate the support as we worked with ALERG to safely bring down the 5 structures this morning. We had one business with window damage and initial assessments show no other issues. This is another milestone in the revitalization of the power plant site, and we look forward to the development and the potential of greater access for our residents to the lake.”

Air quality monitoring was conducted before, during, and after the implosion to ensure that dust suppression measures were effective. Once the data is compiled, the results will be made available on the City of Avon Lake’s website, www.AvonLake.org.
