Avon Lake Announces Successful and Safe Implosion of the Power Plant Building

07/31/2024 – Avon Lake, Ohio – The City Avon Lake is pleased to announce the successful, controlled implosion of the boiler building #9 & #10 by Avon Lake Environmental Redevelopment Group (ALERG) at 5:39 am today. This pivotal event marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts in the demolition of the Avon Lake power plant.
The implosion was carried out with the highest levels of safety and precision, reflecting commitment to responsible development and environmental stewardship. The successful completion of this implosion is a testament to the effective collaboration between ALERG and the City of Avon Lake’s safety forces.
"Today's successful implosion is a key milestone in ALERG’s broader demolition strategy," said Mark Spaetzel, Mayor of Avon Lake. "We are happy to see this first implosion was successful. This operation not only clears the way for future implosions, but also demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that major projects are executed safely and efficiently."
ALERG representatives report the implosion went extremely well and safely demolished a significant building on the site. Dust was at a minimum and moved north and east, dissipating from the site within 15 minutes.
Key aspects of the project include:
• Air Quality Monitors: Both ALERG and the City employed air quality monitors to test the air before, during and after the implosion.
• Enhanced Safety Measures: Comprehensive safety protocols were implemented, including thorough community notifications and emergency preparedness plans by the Avon Lake Safety Forces and Avon Lake Regional Water.
• Environmental Considerations: The Ohio EPA was consulted before the event and was on site during the implosion. Additionally, ALERG submitted to the EPA – Division of Air Pollution Control, the “Notification of Demolition and Renovation/Abatement” form.
